The Winter of Listening

THE WINTER OF LISTENING (by David Whyte)

“No one but me by the fire,
my hands burning
red in the palms while
the night wind carries
everything away outside.

All this petty worry
while the great cloak
of the sky grows dark
and intense
round every living thing.

What is precious
inside us does not
care to be known
by the mind
in ways that diminish
its presence.

What we strive for
in perfection
is not what turns us
into the lit angel
we desire.

What disturbs
and then nourishes
has everything
we need.

What we hate
in ourselves
is what we cannot know
in ourselves but
what is true to the pattern
does not need
to be explained.

Inside everyone
is a great shout of joy
waiting to be born…

And
here
in the tumult
of the night
I hear the walnut
above the child’s swing
swaying
its dark limbs
in the wind
and the snow now
come to
beat against my window
and somewhere
in this cold night
of wind and stars
the first whispered
opening of
those hidden
and invisible springs
that uncoil
in the still summer air
each yet
to be imagined
rose.”

The One Breath

The definition of prayer by Hildegard of Bingen,

“Breathing in and breathing out the one breath of the Universe.”

-Hildegard of Bingen

Prayer indeed.  While saying thank you, the most essential prayer.

Mark Nepo in his chapter “A Reality That Keeps Unfolding,” in Seven Thousand Ways to Listen, says of the breath of prayer:

“This is listening with our entire being. It speaks to an immersion of attention that all the traditions aspire to; each claiming in its own way that peace resides in this completeness which arises when our individual sense of being merges with the ongoing stream of being that is the heartbeat of the Universe. Whether these moments arise from great stillness or great suffering or great love, they all seem unexpected and seem to depend on our ability to hold nothing back.”

Timely words in these days of stillness, suffering and great love that we all are experiencing around our planet. Today, may you find this peace residing in completeness with the heartbeat of the Universe as you navigate your new normal.

Hold nothing back.

I Say Yes

An ancient voice, always there, unearthed and unleashed, surrounded and supported by yesterday’s strangers who are now forever friends,  deeply embedded in my heart. Witnessing Love and Self through another’s eyes. Walking the earth wide open and singing.  Sitting in wonder.  Absorbing the resonances of the sounds brought as a gift by candlelight.  The gong filled with whale song. The mornings fresh, the nights pod like, nestled among my fellow travelers, yet in dark personal silence.  Full to brimming. Rain in the valley, snow on the mountain tops, hail and sunshine glowing through the trees, five white swans to grace us, a gaggle of geese landing in stunning symmetry on the pond….

There is bravery here, there is innocence, there is vulnerability, and there is power.  It is good. And so it is.

I say YES!

Yes to:

Surrender & Trust & Allowing & Receiving & Acceptance

Yes to:

The Grandmother & The Mother & to Gratitude and to Holiness

Yes to:

Deepening and Listening & Witnessing the Love & Radiance in the Eyes & Heart of Each Soul

Yes to:

The Earth, The Sun, The Stars, The Light, The Ancestors & to Spirit

Yes to Life in all her Guises, Learnings and Transformations
