“The one red leaf, the last of its clan,
That dances as often as dance it can,
Hanging so light, and hanging so high,
On the topmost twig that looks up at the sky.”-Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Autumn’s Luster
“There is a harmony
In autumn, and a luster in its sky…”
~Percy Bysshe Shelley
Autumn’s harmony is deeply felt and completely absorbed. This is a season of completion and reflection, and of shimmering beauty, luster and radiance. The grasses and trees are shining forth in full fruition of their potential. The forests rich in greens and yellows.
The gifts of Fall’s presence, endlessly giving.
Everything Beautiful
“I promise if you keep searching for everything beautiful in this world you will eventually become it.”
-Tyler Kent White
The Face of Autumn
“No Spring nor Summer Beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one Autumnal face.”
– John Donne
October
“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are October’s”
-L. M. Montgomery
“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.”
~Jim Bishop
“The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept.
How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves….
But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.”
~John Burroughs, “The Falling Leaves,” Under the Maples
The Love of Wilderness
“The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth … the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need — if only we had the eyes to see.”
— Edward Abbey
Everything is Music
“When I am silent,
I fall into the place where everything is music.”
-Rumi
A Door
“Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life.”
-John Muir.
Every Leaf is a Flower
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.
~Albert Camus
Advice From A Ranger
Tim Rains is a Ranger in Glacier National Park. He is also a talented writer and photographer who posts regularly on Glacier’s Facebook page. I love sharing his prose and the way he absorbs his personal experience of being in the wild places. You feel the love he shares with this wondrous environment… *if you’re not connected to the Glacier National Park page do it now, I know you’ll enjoy it!

Advice From A Ranger (tr)
remember to always wear your hat,
take a good honest look at your shoes,
they’ll be your friend for the next sixteen miles,
then repeat after me:
water is life, water is life, water is life,
take a drink even when you’re not thirsty,
and then look around you,
wherever you are,
you are no different,
than the alpine paintbrush or the grizzly bear,
than the aspen,
or the mountain goat,
water is life, repeat after me, water is life,
and then take another drink,
pack a snack, and then pack another,
and then if you’re like me, pack one more,
and make it something nutritious,
something delicious, something to share,
like chocolate covered espresso beans,
or huckleberries, or honey jalapeno jerky,
or whatever makes you smile, makes you go,
one more mile, one step farther,
because you’ll need it here,
this is not a place for the mild at heart,
this is a place for the wild,
say your “Hey Bears!”, respect their “Hey You’s!”,
their baaaa’s, and bleats, and albeit cute, tiny mews,
share the trail, share the lake, share the road,
and then find a place, wherever you can go,
close your eyes, put your hand to the stone,
take a much needed breath and pay respect,
to those who came before,
your ancients, your elders,
be they stone or cedar, or person,
take another breath, and then one more,
and when you’re ready,
open your eyes, open your eyes, open your eyes,
for this is a place,
to look up,
to look out,
to look down,
and when you are done,
looking up, and out, and down,
then look in, and listen,
and remember:
I’ve said this once,
and I’ll say it again,
this is not a place for the mild at heart,
this is a place for the wild,
look in,
and listen,
you, are no different.
Take another drink of water.
